The Coronation Sunflower Meadow

August 7, 2023

The first of many sunflowers has bloomed in our new Coronation Sunflower Meadow behind Stanley Hill Cemetery.

With their bright, showy petals, sunflowers are incredibly attractive to pollinators, especially bees who are drawn to their UV patterns, with the added benefit of pollinating surrounding plants along the way.

The seeds are a fantastic source of nutrition for birds at the end of the season and, of course, the flowers in bloom cannot fail to make you smile!

The meadow was somewhat experimental (albeit currently thriving!) in a bid to further increase biodiversity in the area.

Along with a native hedge, wildflowers and, of course, our legacy tree planting at Jubilee Wood, Willow Wood has become a haven for wildlife.

Huge thanks to Stuart Channer for sowing the sunflower seeds, and immense gratitude to Barnett Waddingham for sponsoring this project and for their unwavering support on a multitude of projects over the years.

We cannot wait to see the meadow in full bloom in the coming weeks.
